Tour Overview

About 215km north of Kota Kinabalu is the laidback coastal town of Kudat, once an important trading post and capital of Borneo in the late 19th century. Kudat is where people make a pit stop on their way to the Tip of Borneo, the crop of rock that represents the island’s northernmost point. Kudat is also famous for its rich cultural heritage that comprise a warm mix of Chinese, Bajau, Filipino and Rungus, a subtribe of the Kadazan-Dusun and the main ethnic group of the area. The Rungus are renowned as highly skilled artisans who traditionally make colourful beaded necklaces from local plant seeds and clay, adorned with motifs of ancient designs that usually signify old fables and legends. They are also skilled at basketry and cloth weaving.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Journey to the Tip of Borneo and famous Rungus longhouses

  • The scenic drive up north to the Tip of Borneo from Kota Kinabalu takes a little over 3 hours. Along the way, there will be two stopovers, one, visit Gombizau Bee Farm to taste some local nectar and second is at Sumangkap Gong Making to learn about gong making.
  • Visit the Bavanggazo Longhouse offer visitors such experience to learn about the Rungus tribe’s life where traditional lifestyles and skillfully made handicrafts can be seen.
  • Explore the famous longhouses of Kudat where communal living is a practice by the Rungus ethnic tribe’s. Built out of entirely traditional materials of bamboo, wood and beaten bark.
  • Traditional food lunch will be served Rungus style.
  • At the Tip of Borneo, bask in the sun and take in the sea air as your eyes feast on the magnificent scenery all around – be sure to immortalise this moment with photographs.
